Klara Liden creates architectural interventions and installations by cannibalizing existing structures and materials such as cardboard, corrugated metal, drywall, wood, and carpet remnants. With a spirit of activism and rebellion, the artist rethinks the places we inhabit and builds spaces that deviate from their normal functions. Liden’s videos challenge accepted codes of behavior as well; brimming with physical intensity and ferocity, she performs subversive acts for the camera, such as the methodical destruction of a bicycle or an eccentric dance on a crowded Stockholm commuter train. The Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award recognizes and celebrates creative solutions to the problems and opportunities that face the more than half of the world’s population that now lives in cities. Accordingly, the award focuses on projects that benefit communities and local residents by improving their urban environments. It seeks to encourage citizens, policy-makers, private business and non-governmental organizations to take a proactive role in creating shared responsibilities for the cities of the 21st century mankind’s first truly urban age. The competition, which focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge and function of lighting as a primary element in design, is open to all lighting designers, architects, engineers, professional designers, and consultants who use Cooper Lighting fixtures in an interior or exterior design project. Students currently enrolled in any of these disciplines are also eligible to enter projects based on conceptual lighting designs utilizing Cooper Lighting fixtures, and are judged in a separate student category.
